Juvenile Justice

The Juvenile Justice System deals with cases when someone under 18 breaks the law, which is referred to as juvenile delinquency. In juvenile matters, the court's goals are rehabilitation and accountability.   Juvenile delinquency cases are heard in the Passaic County Family Court. Juveniles have the same constitutional rights as adults who are charged with a crime, except for the right to an indictment or a trial by jury. Most juvenile hearings are confidential and closed to the public; however, a crime survivor and their immediate family members have the right to attend certain proceedings.

The Passaic County Prosecutor's Office handles juvenile cases that are hard in the family court. A victim witness advocate is available to assist the victim and their family throughout the process. The advocate's role is to provide information, practical assistance, emotional support, and any appropriate referrals. She can also provide assistance with filing for crime compensation and restitution.
