Sexual Investigations Unit

Sexual Investigations Unit

Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes implemented the Sexual Investigations Unit (SIU) in 2016 to investigate and prosecute sexual offenses outside of the the purview of the Special Victims and Domestic Violence Units.  Supervised by Chief Assistant Prosecutor Gina Pfund,  SIU is comprised of a lieutenant, three detectives and two assistant prosecutors.  In addition to investigating sexual assault allegations, SIU prosecutes sex offenders who violate conditions of their parole or community supervision for life, and who fail to register either quarterly or annually as part of their Megan's Law requirements.

SIU maintains a victim centered approach as per Attorney General Law Enforcement Directive No. 2018-5 ensuring that an alleged victim's safety is the priority during the pendancy of the investigation.  SIU will provide legal guidance to local law enforcement agencies when conducting a sexual assault investigation and speak with  victim to explain the process and rights afforded to them, regardless of whether charges are filed.

If eligible, all sexual assault victims will receive information on how to apply for a Sexual Assault Survivor Protection Act order, which can be requested ex-parte at Passaic Superior Court, Family Division.
