Cellular Phone and Alarm Pendant Programs
In order to assist in securing the safety of domestic violence victims the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office has established two programs:
Cellular Phones
In 1999, the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office asked local citizens to donate their used cellular phones for emergency use by domestic violence victims. Over 900 phones were collected. Bell Atlantic Mobile then tested and re-programmed the donated phones. The phones are now available for domestic violence victims who can utilize them to dial 9-1-1 for police assistance. The phones can only be utilized for 9-1-1 calls and are offered free of charge to qualifying domestic violence victims.

Alarm Pendants
In 1994, the Prosecutor’s Office instituted the AWARE (Abused Women’s Active Response Emergency) Program with the security company, ADT. As a public service, ADT, upon recommendation of the Prosecutor’s Office, provides domestic violence victims with an alarm pendant and an electronic receiver that is attached to a victim’s home phone line. Should a victim’s abuser appear at the victim’s home, she can push the buttons on the pendant, which activates a silent alarm to ADT. An ADT dispatcher immediately alerts the police department in the municipality where the victim lives.
